Even After You're Gone

I hear the clock it's six am
I feel so far from where I've been

Tracy yawned as she hit the alarm. It was too early. She'd forgotten it was Saturday. Yesterday's cases drained all of her energy. Three murders, one very suspicious suicide, two rapes . . . The crimes were similar to ones she had faced in the past, but the faces changed and she remembered them all. Seeing them in the daylight made the crimes no less forgiving, and renewed her determination to solve as many as she could.

Got my eggs, got my pancakes too
Got my maple syrup, everything but you
Break the yolks, make a smiley face
I kinda like it in my brand new place

She sat at the table, eating the breakfast she prepared. On weekends she usually ate breakfast on the porch, basking in the sun's warmth. Unfortunately, today was an overcast day.

Taking a well deserved bath last night helped relax her. She took another shower, to refresh herself. Staring at the mirror, bright blue eyes twinkled through the fog. The eyes blurred and turned into a deep brown color. She frowned and swiped the glass.

I wipe the spots off of the mirror
Don't leave the keys in the door
Never put wet towels on the floor anymore 'cause
Dreams last for so long
Even after you're gone
I know you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you

She dressed in a pair of sweats. Through the windows, she watched the clouds tumble slowly across the sky. Vachon's face came out of the clouds to haunt her. She wiped the tears as they fell. She started the coffee machine, hoping that the caffeine would energize her. She picked up the paper from the porch.

Called my momma she was out for a walk
Consoled a cup of coffee but it didn't wanna talk
Picked up a paper, it was more bad news
More hearts being broken or people being used

Tracy had enough of moping around. She looked at the listings for the movie theaters and times. The raindrops pounded against her windows. She was going to the movies, the weather be damned. She changed into clothing more appropriate for an outing: jeans and a sweatshirt. As she left her place, the rain came down harder. She ran back inside to retrieve a coat.

Put on my coat in the pouring rain
Saw a movie it just wasn't the same
'Cause it was happy and I was sad
It made me miss you oh so bad

Tracy watched the movie. She tried remembering the last time that she had gone to a movie, and realized it had been too long ago.

Flashback

"Tracy." A cool puff of air brushed against her ear, and she was startled out of her seat, spilling the grape juice over the front of her new silk blouse, a new *white* blouse. She turned and found Vachon by the couch.

"I told you not to do that !" Annoyance made her voice a higher pitch than it was normally. He sat down and shrugged his shoulders, raising his hands in silent apology.

She stomped past him into the kitchen to get a towel and club soda in an attempt to rescue the blouse. The heavy footsteps returned then . . . thump! She had thrown an orange at him.

"It's ruined." The front of her blouse was splotched with purple.

"So?" He shrugged again. "I'll buy you a new one." He stood up and walked to where she was. "Go change, we're going to the movies."

They had a wonderful time at the movies, despite the rocky start to the evening. He had charmed her, entertained her, and was the perfect date. To any person observing them, they appeared to be like any other couple enjoying a night out.

Dreams last for so long
Even after you're gone
I know you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you

Tracy walked out of the theater. The rain had stopped. Sitting on a bench, she watched as the crowd thinned, and people passed her by. Couples, singles, young, old . . . they took no notice of the young blond. Tracy sat there, twirling a wisp of her hair around her fingers. The sensation brought another memory to the surface. She smiled to herself and released her hair. She grasped the locket around her neck. The locket contained some of Vachon's own shorn locks.

Flashback

"Have you ever thought of growing your hair out?" Vachon twirled a wisp of her hair in his fingers.

She pulled away. "Have you ever thought about a haircut?" She pointed at his pride and joy.

"Point taken." Vachon replied. "Any particular reason you like to keep it short?"

Tracy smiled, blushing slightly. She bowed her head and Vachon heard a muffled, "Pigtails."

"What?"

"You heard me. Pigtails." She crossed her arms, recalling a childhood moment of pain. She scrunched her nose and continued. "The boys in school used to pull on my pigtails. As soon as I was old enough, I cut my hair."

"As soon as you were 'old' enough?" He blinked.

"Yeah. Mom wouldn't let me cut my hair any shorter than here." She pointed to the middle of her back.

The bus ride home was uneventful. She made polite conversation with the person next to her, acting as if nothing was the matter.

Go about my business, I'm doing fine
Besides, what would I say if I had you on the line
Same old story, not much to say
Hearts are broken every day

She arrived home, just as the wind and rain began to pick up again. It was going to be quite a storm. It was too early in the evening to go to bed, but she wasn't in any mood to argue with her body. The cold had gotten to her.

Brush my teeth and put the cap back on
I know you hate it when I leave the light on
I pick a book up, turn the sheets down
Take a deep breath and a good look around

She made sure all the door and windows were shut. She tried calling her mother again, but she still wasn't home. Sighing, she walked back to her room and prepared to cuddle up with the book.

Put on my pjs and hop into bed
I'm half alive but I feel mostly dead
I try and tell myself it'll be all right
I just shouldn't think anymore tonight

She looked at the book she had picked up: "Interview with the Vampire." She threw it across the room. She turned the light off, and sank into her warm comforters to dream of Vachon.

Dreams last for so long
Even after your gone
I know you love me
And soon you will see
You were meant for me
And I was meant for you
